Yo man, this $49 recording software keeps amazing me. I use it basically for midi sequencing, and also for its auto-chord wizard which is OUTSTANDING. When I get lazy (which is alot) I'll download a midi file of a song to quickly review the chord and keyboard parts.
But this software continues to suck me in. I keep insisting on relating how powerful this software is compared to its price. It seems to be marketed for students or novice DAW users, which I can appreciate, but the more I use it the more Im realizing it does all the basics that the high DAWs have, and its SOOoo user friendly I find myself choosing this as my go-to software for little things I do.
I really dont record much and the only other software I've used is Cubase and Adobe Audtion, with no experience in any other high end DAW's. But if anyone is familiar with this PowerTracks, can you tell me what I'm missing from the high end software other than the obvious like the hardware integration that im familiar with. I can only go by what Keyboard says: 1. 48 tracks total of midi or audio isnt that much. I can use 100.

Few people need or use the power available in their high priced software, and would save a lot of money by working with something cheaper. If they only knew, and if they did not feel the peer presure to use something 'cooler'. I own two of the most expensive softwares, and there are reasons why a business finds value in such packages.
But for the average guy, simpler offerings often cover all their needs. PG is a fantastic company, with a bunch of different programs that do a tremendous amount for peanuts.
They are also great guys, easy to deal with. Likewise, Magix offers some pretty killer capabilities in their entry level Music Studio program, because they 'borrow' cool parts of their more popular and much more expensive audio program, Samplitude, and the very expensive Sequoia. Reaper gets a lot of props from users, though it doesn't offer me anything that I don't already have. There are other shareware and freeware audio programs that are very usable, if you are able to put up with either their quirks or their limitations.
This seems ot be easier for me, having grown up with the limitations of analog tape; than it is for youger recordists, who all seem to need 7,000 tracks and 63 different reverbs to record a simple pop song. If you have the time and the inclination to explore, there are some interesting offerings out there. I tried it years ago when I was first selecting a DAW. I found the UI balffling and inscrutable. Hopefully they've completetly redesigned it since then (2003). I went with n-Track for about the same price, because I installed it, pushed the obvious buttons, and it did what I expected. I'd even paid for it (PTP), but bought n-Track based on its demo, and continued to use it for years.
Lately I've been having dropout problems with n-Track, so I'm now using Reaper, but not doing much recording. Both n-Track and Reaper are very feature-laden and do nearly everything the expensive programs do, just as well. Another contender is Multitrack Studio. PTP also can show MIDI tracks using music notation, which is nice. This is simply reality. There are some excellent effects that have latency too high for real-time use, such as convolution reverbs. They'd have that same problem in ProTools. This is not a mark against PTP in any sense.
The effects listed in Keyboard were common effects like eqs. Sure, a fancypants convolution reverb is going to be a CPU killer, but your average eq is not.

Yeah, that is great promo, but not true. No problem by me, but if you troll around the various forums you'll find the holes in Reaper from a pro standpoint, from aresource standpoint.

Another great job of promo. The truth is that any of the major DAW programs will do most of what anyone wants, and each has areas wherein it does something or other better than the others. So you just need to keep checking them out until you find the one that you like, that has a work-flow that fits your needs and males sense to you. I have two favorites, neither of which is Pro Tools, but I'll use whataever is handy, because in the long run they all make audio, and they all create files that I can transfer to any other DAW and edit or remix. I used to use PowerTracks Pro as far back as the mid 90s, when it was a sequencer-only application. It did just about everything that you could reasonably ask for, for such a cheap price.
It had MIDI time code and SMPTE sync, and all kinds of deep features. Later on I upgraded up to version 5.x which had basic audio recording, but by the time I got to audio-recording DAWs with VSTi support, I started using Tracktion. I had the early Power Tracks and loved it's simplicity before audio. I found Cakewalk to be overkill with lousy ergonomics for simple stuff. Power Tracks was a great value for what was then $29.00. To this day I don't think Cakewalk gets ergonomics and ease-of-use at all at least in their Sonar Producer editions.

It's almost assumed in some circles that it's the defacto standard. It is ABSOLUTELY assumed to be the standard, by all sorts of people,and that is what is so baffling. There are definitely a lot of what I call 'real' Pro Tools rigs out there in major facilities, but all the nickle/dime operations running the cheapest M-Audio interfaces with PT or whatever. And consider that the major mastering houses pretty much don't use PT at all.

Anyway to answer your question, the Producer and Engineers Wing of NARAS created a standard for file interchange, which, if followed, allows any DAW to exchange files with any other DAW. That is the STANDARD. Now, I know a lot of guys who buy the cheapest available version of Pro Tools for the PC, to use for file exchange, just to avoid all the bullshit. But I used to make files on SAW, import them into SoundForge and convert them to AIFF (which I then could not read, that far back on a PC.) burnt them to a disk and send them off to video houses (which at the time mostly used Mac apps) or audio houses using PT, with no problems. In the fall I was hired to engineer 6 or 8 projects that were recorded in a different facility using Samplitude Pro, and also using DigiCheck Record. The disks were sent to a mixdown facility that uses PT on a Mac, and there were absolutely NO problems.
These were big dollar, one-shot projects with no second chances and no excusses accepted. Everything was perfect. So, in terms of file exchange, most pros don't seem to have a problem. You can argue with someone else about the shortcomings of PT, I pretty much don't pay any more attention to them than those of any other DAW that I do not use. I picked my tool, and that is what I use. I'll just say what I always say. All of the major DAWs do an equally good job, each has areas in which it excells and each has its shortcomings; and you'll find that the one that works great for you might not work so well for the next guy.
I compare them to tenis shoes. You like Rebok, I like New Balance, Dave likes Adias, and somehow we all manage to get down the road. About file exchange though. How often do you need to exchange files with another studio?
(I mean, the NARAS procedure is so easy, but still, for me at least it is very rare to need to send anything out. When I get it, it usually doesn't leave until it is complete.).

A number of people logged on to say that it is a very valuable tool for certain aspects of the audio community, and they use it all the time.
I believe that their main focus is video, but I'd have to go back and review the posts to be sure. But it is not the universal exchange format that it set out to be. Frankly, I'm surprised that it manages to hang on, when it was declared 'dead' over ten years ago. Like the Alesis SR-16, it just keeps hanging in there. Few DAWs support it, and so many things cannot transfer anyway.
I've been at AES meetings where people like Chuck Ainley and George Massenberg complain that they cannot depend upon a Pro Tools Session created on one version to open correctly in another. I've seen others make similar complaints about their DAW software of choice. That considered, it would be a lot harder to transfer among different softwares.
And don't forget that everyone has different plug ins, and different versions of plug ins. All in all, I'm glad that I don't have to try to write software to make that happen. The NARAS format is so logical and makes so much sense and is so simple that it is easier than taking reels of tape from one studio to another.

True, it was a lot easier to swap data between Pro Tools rigs before virtual instruments and mixing in the box became popular. And yes, there are ways to transfer a lot of data between DAW platforms. That said, it's impossible to open a file that was created in one company's DAW by another company's DAW without some form of prep work - consolidating audio files, doing a 'Save As,' etc. For example, I can't just open up my old DP or Logic files with Pro Tools or vice versa, but I can open my old Pro Tools files with Pro Tools, and DP files with DP, etc. In other words, compatibility's not what it used to be; but it's still more seamless than the alternative.
I certainly wouldn't make my buying decision based solely on compatibility, but it may be worth factoring in for some people. It was for me.
